On Thursday the 29th of October 2009, the countdown to next year's Delhi Commonwealth Games began. This was the ceremonial Queen's Baton relay. The Queen Elizabeth II handed over the glittering baton to President Pratibha Patil in London. The message was engraved onto a miniature 18-carat gold leaf that is symbolic of the ancient Indian palm leaf patras, which was placed in the baton and passed it on to the President to mark the beginning of a year-long relay. It is for the first time that the Head of a State attended the traditional ceremony and received the baton from the Queen. Then the President passed on the baton to Sports Minister MS Gill, who handed it over to the Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi. Finally it reached the hands of first baton bearer Abhinav Bindra, India's only Olympic Gold medallist. The air rifle shooter Bindra began the relay-run and handed over the baton to legendary middle-distance runner Lord Sebastian Coe, waiting outside gates of the Palace. The Queen’s Baton Relay had reached Pakistan. And on the 25th of June 2010 the torch of XIX Commonwealth Games, was handed over by the Pakistanis to India at Wagha Border, Pakistan. Olympians of Pakistan, The gold medalists of the past commonwealth games, several government officials and members of the civil society and the military were also present on the occasion. On the 1st October 2010 the Queen's Baton 2010 Delhi is being taken around the city in the final lap of its magnificent journey across the country. From Vijay Chowk at 7 am, to India Gate to Teen Murti Bhawan. Then on to Qutub Minar and Lotus Temple to the Delhi Secretariat and the Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib (20 Minutes); on to St. Columba’s Cathedral and the Rail Museum in Chankyapuri en route to the Games Village. The Queen's Baton will reach Games Village at 10.55 am where it will be on display for 45 minutes. It will then be taken on a trip to city landmarks like Akshardham Temple, Rajghat, Red Fort and Jama Masjid.
